In the vibrant journey of the year, 2023-24, Vannam has organised a series of diverse and impactful events. Each event reflects our commitment to celebrating the colourful spectrum of the queer community. Here's a glimpse of what we've achieved so far:
Sensitisation workshop and Panel discussion in collaboration with the Raahat Project
Vannam conducted an enlightening sensitization workshop, in collaboration with The Raahat Project, on 6th August, 2023. This workshop played a crucial role in raising awareness about the LGBTQIA++ community while also providing allyship training to all participants.
Vannam, also orchestrated an informative and interactive panel discussion on mental health in collaboration with The Raahat Project and MITR, IITM. The event was followed by the launch of The Raahat Project's learning course, tailored specifically for young LGBTQIA++ individuals, aimed at overcoming emotional barriers. This thought-provoking session featured Chapal Mehra and Ella D'Verma, who shared their valuable insights on various pertinent topics, including queer friendships, psychological well-being, and representation in academia.
Insti's first-ever Pride Parade
Vannam hosted IIT Madras’ first ever Pride Parade on campus on the 9th of September 2023. The parade began at Himalaya Lawns, preceded by a short gathering with the “Sam-Made” accessories and jewelry stall, face and nail painting, and concluded with an after-party at HSB133 filled with music, poetry and art. With an incredible turnout and boundless enthusiasm, the event was monumental for the queer community on-campus and a giant step towards a more inclusive and accepting campus.
Vannathirai: Film Screening followed by a discussion
Vannam has been organizing monthly movie screenings, Vannathirai, since August 2023. The first movie screened was Pride (2014) in August, followed by Joyland (2022) in September, Happy Together (1997) in October, Show Me Love (1998) in November, Bottoms (2023) in February. A special edition of Vannathirai was conducted during Vanavil 2024, where Vannam screened the movie Kaathal: The Core (2023) in March, followed by a talk with the film director, Jeo Baby. The latest edition and the seventh feature of Vannathirai was organised in April by screening the documentary All the Beauty and the Bloodshed (2022). While the inception of Vannathirai may have been due to reasons of outreach through entertainment, it was successful in bringing together an enormous group of LGBTQIA+ people and allies and talk about changing things for the better.
Poetry Reading - SC Verdict
On October 17, the plea for marriage equality seeking the right to marry for queer people was rejected by the Supreme Court of India, however, the moral validity of equal marriage and co-adoption were favourable to the queer folks. This came as a blow in tiring times when minority voices are being throttled to stop any dissent and disdain against the establishment. As a form of condemnation of the verdict & solidarity with the community, Vannam held a queer poetry session at 6 PM on October 19th, 2023.
Radio Gay Gay: Karaoke Nite
On November 4th, Vannam presented a fabulous showcase of inclusivity and musical merriment at HSB 133, dubbed the Radio Gay Gay Karaoke Night. Over 50 participants, dressed to the nines, made this event truly extraordinary. Groups of attendees eagerly took their turns at the karaoke machine, supported by an exuberant crowd that cheered them on and joyfully joined in the dancing. Radio Gay Gay served as a delightful and secure haven for LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies. It was a night filled with harmony, unity, and sheer enjoyment, where voices were raised and celebrated in an atmosphere of acceptance and love, reminding everyone of the beauty of embracing diversity through music.
Queer Prom
Vannam successfully organized the first ever queer prom to be held in IIT Madras on April 21st, 2024. The event, held at HSB 133, fostered a space brimming with laughter, love, and energetic dancing, all illuminated by the gentle gleam of fairy lights. The gathering brought together members of the LGBTQ+ community and their allies, fostering a heartwarming atmosphere of acceptance and camaraderie. As the music played and the laughter echoed, it was clear that this wasn't just a prom—it was a celebration of love, friendship, and the beautiful diversity of our community.
Vanavil, the second edition of our flagship annual queer festival, took place from March 1-3, 2024, and it was a celebration like no other!
